Dedicated to Learning
I always knew that I was destined to become a teacher. As an undergraduate, I attended Central Connecticut State University and earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Shortly after that, I obtained my Master's Degree in Literacy Education. During the Summer of 2019 I earned a cross endorsement in Special Education through CREC. As a busy teacher, I balance my students' learning needs with sparking curiosity and interest through their teaching. I also work closely with my colleagues to determine the best plan for each of my students' unique learning needs. My students' needs come first and one size does not fit all. One thing my students and I always say is that "We do hard things." This means that we don't take the easy way out but instead find a way to understand what we are learning and practice until we get it.
Curriculum
Mathematics
In Mathematics, my students are working on developing their number sense and problem solving. I use a variety of strategies and use the Math in Focus resource to teach my students. My goal is to help students develop into mathematical thinkers and to think outside the box. Some of the concepts that are covered are:
Number Identification
Counting
Place Value
Addition
Subtraction
Problem Solving
Fundations
Fundations is a phonics program that I use to teach my students how to read. It is multi-sensory and the students also use it in their general education settings. It is also repetitive and uses routines so students become familiar and can use it in a variety of settings. Using Fundations, the students develop as readers and writers overtime and grow with the program to become life-long readers, thinkers, and writers. Some of the concepts that are covered in Fundations are:
Letter identification
Word awareness
Letter Sounds
Vocabulary
Trick Words (also known as Sight or High Frequency Words)
Fluency
Comprehension
Handwriting
Spelling
Punctuation and Capitalization
Social Emotional Learning
Students in my room practice social emotional learning all the time! Social emotional learning (SEL) is all about interacting with each other and the importance of feelings and understanding. "SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions." Social emotional learning is not something that can be mastered quickly but it has been studied as a way to mediate critical situations that many students go through at school as well as home. My goal is for my students to feel comfortable at school and willing to take on academic challenges. SEL is very important to myself and my students.
